Taking your goods from the UK to the Mediterranean might seem complicated, but it actually takes just 2 steps:
- A Eurotunnel or freight ferry ticket from the UK to Continental Europe
- A freight ferry ticket from Continental Europe to your chosen destination.
So, whilst there are no direct ferries from the UK to the Mediterranean serving commercial routes, you can still transport your goods seamlessly and cost-effectively.
Here’s how.
UK to Continental Europe
In order to get to these popular freight destinations, you will need to travel to Spain, Italy or Greece first.
The easiest way that most lorry drivers choose is to travel to France via Dover to Calais, the most popular ferry route for couriers in van and haulage companies with arctics. It offers the most flexible option for travelling to all areas of France. From there you need to drive to Italy or Spain.
Another way used by some drivers is to get a direct ferry from the UK to Spain and from there catch a ferry to Italy.
Cyprus
If you are planning to go to Cyprus you will need to travel to Greece, starting your trip in Folkestone or Dover and arriving in France, from there driving onward to Greece and travelling via ferry to Cyprus (Lavrio - Limassol).
You can travel there with ferry operator Salamis Lines, which operates on this route once a week. Other options include driving to Italy and taking a freight ferry from Ancona to Greece, Bari to Greece, or Brindisi to Greece and more.
Tunisia
If you are planning to go to Tunisia you will need to travel to Italy , starting your trip in Folkestone or Dover and arriving in France, from there driving onward to Italy and travelling via ferry to Tunisia.
On this route you will cross with Grimaldi Lines or Grandi Navi Veloci on a 20+ hour crossing, providing plenty of rest time for drivers.
Greek Islands
If you are planning to go to a Greek Island such as Heraklion, you will need to start your trip by travelling from England to France via freight ferry or Eurotunnel.
From there, you or your driver will need to take the goods to Greece, and the Piraeus to Heraklion route will take your goods the rest of the way.
On this route there are three operators - Blue Star Ferries, Minoan Lines and Superfast Ferries. Each operator runs 1 sailing per day.
Malta
If you are planning to go to Malta, you will need to travel to Italy first.
After starting your trip in Folkestone or Dover and arriving in France, you will then need to transport your goods (via road freight) to Italy and travelling via ferry to Malta.
Ferries on these routes are operated by Grimaldi Lines and Virtu Ferries.
